Today we use smallest design for everything. In this world where everything seems to shrink day by day or even in seconds, should there not be something which should be able to produce electricity being as small as possible? If so, this one is going to make you happy.
Nano Technology has provided us with a battery that can provide large amount of current and would surely render these large size batteries useless in a very small time.
The researchers at Rice university have packed lithium-ion battery into a single one and also said that it is as small as a device can possibly get.
Professor Pulickel Ajayan led a group of researchers and built this hybrid energy storage device which can serve as both a battery and a super capacitor. The first version sandwiched an electrolyte between a nickel/tin anode and a cathode made of a polymer called polyaniline. The cathode also served as a supercapacitor, storing lithium ions in bulk, as this writeup by Rice university explains. The prototype proved that lithium ions would move through the electrolyte and into the cathode.
This was then incorporated into a nanowire by a complex process of etching (process of using strong acid or mordant to cut into the unprotected parts of a metal surface to create a design of Intaglio in the metal) and chemical washing. The developers are trying to make nanowires with ultra-thin separation so that the device remains as small as possible.
The completed wire-batteries are about 50 microns tall, which is roughly the diameter of a human hair, according to Rice.
But the most unwelcomed news is that it can only be charged and discharged for maximum number of 20 times. But we can feel good to know that scientists are trying to develop it for a longer life time.
When this comes available in market, be ready to get the news of every electronic gadget in nano size. Who knows what more is going to be NANO-ed?
